Racing at Road America

Drivers from around the country will gather October 9-11, at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, for the 57th running of the Sports Car Club of America National Championship Runoffs. The event will determine the best drivers of the season within 26 classes of competition with nearly 600 entries expected. The Runoffs have been known to be springboard to higher-level racing with a history of big names such as Skip Barber, Paul Newman, Bobby Rahal, Graham Rahal, Roger Penske, and Jimmy Vasser.The paddock is expected to be filled with local racers fielding a large variety of cars including American muscle cars, open-wheel formula cars, historic Triumphs and Austin Healeys, Toyotas, Mazdas, and BMWs. The 4.048-mile circuit features 14 turns, three high-speed straights, and 170 feet of eleveation changes. Tickets are available at www.roadamerica.com, please be ready to follow safety protocols such as social distancing and face coverings during the event.

Shoulda, coulda, if only

On another site, someone posted that there is finally equality in the 2 cycle/4 cycle engine power plant/drive train. I will have to disagree with that. Yes James Weida drove an outstanding race. His driving skills is the only reason that he was able to advance to the front and close in on Clint. Clint had a 0.6 second lead at the finish line.

Looking at the race lap chart, James was faster than Clint in the last 5 laps. Based on that information, one could predict that with a few more laps, James would have been able to past Clint, but the race is only 13 laps.

If you remove James's position in the finish, the fastest Rotax powered car would be the #38 car of Steven Jondal who finished in 6 place. So saying the fact that one driver of a Rotax powered car was able to keep up with the 4 cycle/drivetrain group makes the difference in the 2 cycle/4 cycle equal is nonsense.
